Here is a group of cyclists riding south on PCH 101 in SoCal. These guys are alternating between riding on the shoulder, and moving into the narrow lane when cars are parked on the shoulder. Note that they dont signal or look back, so they cant possibly yield to any overtaking traffic that has the right of way in the lane. They just suddenly pull out into the travel lane without warning. Im sure every time theyre buzzed theyre surprised. The leader of this group, by the way, is a cycling instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists, just so you know what that certification is worth (I say that as an LCI myself). Another cyclist, Gary Cziko, with video running, is consistently using the full lane. Faster traffic approaching quickly from behind can see from a long way back that they have to change lanes to pass, and do. Gary reports that further down the road he slowed and let this group catch him. He was chastised by the LCI group leader for pissing off motorists. This is what were up against. Even bicyclists dont accept that Bicyclists Belong in the Traffic Lane!
