Here is a history of Singleton Springs and the cemetery as shared by Patsy Franks Hensley, in THE HERITAGE OF TATE COUNTY MISSISSIPPI. The Singleton Springs Community was named for the Singleton family who came to DeSoto County(Tate County was formed from part of DeSoto County) around 1840.The Samuel Singleton(1799 Va.-ca 1856-57) family lived where The Hunters Chapel is now located and later his sons, Charles, Redding, Andrew Jackson, John, George, and Samuel, Jr.lived in the area around the church. There was a spring a few hundred yards away. Hence, the area became Singleton Springs. The William H. Singletons lived near the Center Hill and Blue Goose area, a short distance away. This was a farming community and the Singletons built a gin and a sawmill at Singleton Springs. In about 1880 most of the Slingletons moved to Texas. They sold out(to be paid from the proceeds of cotton ginned) to the Hunters and the Hunters were there when Hunters Chapel Church was built. The church was located near the cemetery, but was later moved to the present location. The Singleton Springs School was located in this church, but was later moved to the Eliphaz Post Office. Other early families in the area were Pickle, Luckett, Nelson, Morris, Rhodes, Reeds, Clayton, Fuller, Gregory, Cowan, Chisholm, Pace, Hardin, Leonards, Lashley, and Presley. The Smiths now live where the Lashley family lived. The Singleton Springs Cemetery is the only landmark of the original area. Descendants of the original families and later arrivals are buried here Martha Ann Mattie Singleton Fuller born 1839 and died 1896 is the oldest Singleton family member buried in Singleton Springs. She was the daughter of William H. Singleton. Napoleon Singleton b. 1871- d 1878, Walter S. Singleton b. 1875- d. 1879, and Sarah Angeline Singleton Moseley b. 1868- d. 1962, children of J.C. Singleton and Angeline Burkhart are the other Singletons buried here. Other families buried here are Aldridge, Baker, House, Boling, Gann, Garrett, Giles, Hatton,, Howe, Houston, Hunters, Manning, ONeal, Porter, Rich, Rowe, Scoggins, Sinquefield, Rigsby, Yount, Campbell, Walters, Spivey, Thomason and the largest number of marked graves and I believe there are many more unmarked graves belong to the CARLISLE family. The original, member of this family George Washington Carlisle was born in Georgia and moved to Tate County after serving in the Confederate military. His wife Margaret Adeline Rigsbys mother Martha Grizzle Rigsby widow of Alfred Rigsby move here with her other children as well as Margaret. I believe all of these are buried in Singleton Springs. Many of these graves are in the area under or around the large old oak that must be removed or future storm damage may cause breakage of many tombstones, some of which are the oldest. If you know of a family who has family members buried here, please relay this message and contribution information.. Checks or money orders should be made out to Singleton Springs Cemetery. If you live in the Strayhorn or surrounding area, you can drop off donations to Mrs Dale Hensley, 5130 Hwy 4 West, Senatobia, MS 38668. If you dont have family members buried there, you can still contribute. All contributions, no matter how small, are much appreciated.
