Here is a little of my story (Ciarán is okay, I don’t want you - TopicsExpress

Here is a little of my story (Ciarán is okay, I don’t want you to worry you as you read) : I have has 18 pregnancies but not carried most of them long enough to bring my little ones home. Some ending very early, one ectopic and other ones getting far enough along for me to really believe I was going to bring a baby home only for it all to go wrong. So this might make me a bit over protective and I apologise for that. I have brought three wee boys home, Darragh and Cillian are now 6 and 4, and 6 weeks ago Nathan and I were so lucky to bring Ciarán our 3rd wee boy home after 3 weeks in hospital. Due to my work I have seen lots of sick children and some with preventable illnesses like whooping cough so I did lots of research and decided I would get Ciarán immunised as soon as I could which at the moment in the part of Australia I live in is 6 weeks. I knew whooping cough was around more these days due to the fact not everyone immunises so I took precautions. Ciarán was born early so he spent nearly the 1st 3 weeks in hospital surrounded by whooping cough immunised people. I only let people visit who had had the jab. When we got home I only let people visit who had had the jab, I didn’t take him out we pretty much stayed home until he was over 6 weeks (40 weeks corrected). Once he had the jab I knew he wasn’t fully immune but I became a little less protective. I have friends who have chosen not to immunise their children and when they asked to visit I boldly told them no because your children are not immunised both my friends understood and visited without their children, don’t be scared to take this approach I have found if people choose not to immunise they are happy with their choice and not offended by bold reactions and statements like mine. Last week Ciarán started showing signs of an illness and on Thursday it was thought he might have whooping cough, we are waiting on the results, I now think it is not whooping cough because he seems to be on the mend but he was still sick and it was very scary. I am sharing this because I feel really strongly that new parents need to do some research and if like me you decide to immunise your baby please try really hard to keep them away from possible exposure to whooping cough until they are immunised. This is not always going to be possible with school runs to do and so on but I am sharing my story because it might save one family from what Ciarán is going through.
