Here is a somewhat tangential TBT post. Ten years ago I was teaching an introduction to 3D CG course at USCs animation division. Andy Huang, a very talented freshman student was a member of that class. I had long used a simple culminating project for my intro course that consisted of modeling, lighting, rigging, and animating an individually designed jack-in-the box. The constraints of this assignment were intended to allow beginners to focus on a few essential elements in creating their final project. Andy brought in a project he had started in high school and had been working on at the Palos Verdes Computer Technology Center before entering USC. This project centered on a complex jack-in-the box that examined the social issues of idealized mass media images and their influence on viewers tendencies to match representations of an unrealistically idealized self. I advised him on aspects of the project, but Andrew really did not need much assistance as he already possessed a clear sense of what he was doing. Andy ended up doing a separate project for the course as he felt that would only be fair to the other students. He went on to a brilliant career creating personal films, music videos, and commercials. Andrew Thomas Huang will be presenting his work at CalArts tomorrow as the first guest in a student curated visiting artist series. Needless to say I am looking forward to this. https://youtube/watch?v=zl6hNj1uOkY
