Here is a wonderful TedxTeen Talk by a gifted child, Jacob Barnett. Jacob is a high-functioning autist, a Rain Man character. Yes, he has autism. He is also a child prodigy. Jacob challenges the way we think about mathematics and physics. He also challenges the way we think about autism and achievement. As Jacob, puts it: I wasnt supposed to be thinking at all! Indeed, in the education system he found himself in, Jacob failed. He failed finger painting, he failed Special Ed... He could have been lost forever. Instead, as he puts it so endearingly, he stopped learning and began thinking. The result is that he now teaches astrophysics and he has been published in respected scientific journals while still an adolescent. A diagnosis, is only PART OF what a child is or may become.
