Here is an animation of the big sunspot group from the previous post. This runs from the 5th to the 11th of January, and shows the structural changes in the sunspots over that period. The perspective also changes over this period, as the spot group moves around the spherical face of the Sun. The dark inner part of a sunspot is called the umbra, and is around 1,500 °C cooler than the visible surface of the Sun, at around 5,500 °C. The lighter region of a sunspot is called the penumbra, and often shows a streaky structure due to radiating magnetic field lines. -- Duncan Waldron
