Here is an important op-ed piece from the Hong Kong edition of China Daily. China Daily is typically regarded as a mouthpiece of the party. Thiis is a warning - quite a clear one. Clearly the only viable solution is the third option: To take extraordinary measures to end the chaos before it does more harm to Hong Kong. It is also interesting for the rhetoric -- the US is instigating this. The piece also opens with some comments about the police being attacked. What has been quite noteworthy thus far is just how peaceful this has been - Im not sure about the allegation of violence. I certainly wouldnt rule it out and it may not be well reported in the western media. However, I would also not be surprised if it were not really quite the incident the article suggests. Hard to know and Ive not yet had time to sniff around and investigate for credible corroborating reports. If anyone wants to work on that, feel free and please report back.
