Here is my rant for Common Core math Ive witnessed my kids experience this new math when they come home from school. Ive watched my oldest sit in bafflement at what his teacher showed him in class. They gave him options and different ways of doing the math. He was horribly confused. My wife and I both showed him the old math and instantly he understood. Its now his preferred form of math. I watched the video all the way. With an open mind in the hopes that I might learn something new and great. Hoping that I could understand the concept of how this new math is so much better. Simply put, the new math focuses on the thought process of how and why to solve the math problem versus just solving it. There are two problems with this. 1. Math is a concrete thing. There is no mysticism to it. Its full of hard facts. 1 + 1 = 2. Period. 2. Our kids are going to be focusing on the ideology of math and when they get to their jobs in the future, are going to be far less prepared for their work than other nationalities. Before you shoot down my argument. Think about it. When you focus on teaching the theory of something versus its concrete and undeniable truths, you create a LOT of grey area. Grey area is open to interpretation. Its open to arguments. Math has no room for interpretation or arguments unless you are in the forefront of Math. Every day jobs REQUIRE you to know the concrete truths of math. You bring that theory of math to the workplace, youll get fired. Plain and simple. Try using this new math at your job and see what happens...
