Here is my rant of the day, so hang on. After visiting a few galleries and gift shops where I see some very beautiful things, I am appalled at the prices I see so many of the pieces so ridiculously lower than they should be. This is mostly from ladies that aren’t getting paid for their time let alone their material. There is no way you can be making any money off a nicely made bracelet for $12.00 once you pay commission to a store unless you are buying this from China. I saw a $6.00 repurposed sweater purse, tell me how you can be making a profit even if you got it for nothing. Why is it that especially women undervalue themselves and their time, men don’t do this? All the things I saw that were made by men were properly priced but the beadwork and jewelry all made by women so terrible underpriced. If you are in business you need to make a profit if not you are a hobbyist. Those of us that are in business need to make a profit and underpricing your work hurts everyone. I wished I knew how to do something about this. This is both a problem for the gallery or store as well as those of us wanting to sell real craftsmanship. I want everyone to make a profit and do well with their art but these people are working for third world labor wages. If I were an art gallery or store owner I would not allow someone to put something in my store with prices that I knew were too low. To me this is unethical to not help those who are clearly underpricing their work. Underpricing your work teaches the public that your work isn’t worth much and that those that do properly price their work is over charging. I hope this opens a dialog to address this problem.
