Here is something interesting for everyone to think about... People say that the ice caps melting is a bad thing, right? So what happens if the ice caps comeback? First what happens is that the sea level drops, trapping a huge portion of the worlds water in unusable polar ice. That removes massive amounts of moisture from the atmosphere, making the air much dryer. Climate patterns change causing many areas to turn into deserts. Large areas of land become uninhabitable due to extreme cold and desert conditions, causing the extinction of flora/fauna that have become dependent on specific climate conditions. Sure, the polar bears dont mind... But as the global temps drop the amount of tropical climate zones lessen, and there is far more life in the tropical regions than all other regions. Life on land depended on tropical conditions for hundreds of millions of years. This entire planet and ecosystem evolved to run most efficiently in tropical conditions. The amount of life in the entire Tundra cant even compare to the amount of life in one cubic mile of the Amazon Rain Forest Now, what happens if ALL of the polar ice melts? Tropical regions expand due to more available water. Water is the source of all life! Since the planet is hotter, more evaporation occurs causing more rain. Yes, there would be far worse hurricanes, but those storms move massive amounts of water (and heat) around the globe. Tundra regions may melt, but this will create massive temperate wetlands. Birds will migrate by the billions to these regions, all fertilizing the new soil forming below.. Portions of these regions can be drain (using proper land management techniques) and be farmed to feed the ever growing population of humans. Because of the increase in rain, the wet season in the deserts will come back, bringing new life to barren regions. More trees will grow back in regions that become too hot and humid for humans to live in comfortably. The more water, tropic and sub-tropic regions, and temperate wetlands mean more plants filtering out CO2. Warmer wetter climates mean more fungi breaking down decaying matter into extremely fertile soil. All in all, with proper land, waste, and water management the total melt-down of the polar ice caps could be a boon for life on this planet. Personally, I dont see how people think that the best way to manage the growing population is to bottleneck them all in by increased polar ice. The best way to improve life on this planet is to work with the historical cycle of global climate and adapt to future conditions. Being sad about the polar bears may seem the politically correct thing to do, but the only way to stop the current climate change is to completely and globally eliminate every single amenity you have grown accustom to. Electricity, cars, phones, toilet paper, running water, etc. Anything else is just a stop-gap measure which will fix nothing and only prolong an inevitable shift in global climate. Posting about global issues on Facebook from a computer or phone made by the same polluting processes (mineral mining, factories, fuel for shipping, etc) doesnt make you a eco-warrior. Complaining about climate change doesnt solve anything, neither does buying organic foods, recycled products, factory-made green technologies, hybrid or electric cars, etc. All these products and their individual components from production to consumption are horribly polluting the planet. Dont fool yourselves! A middle-classed eco-minded American is responsible for FAR more pollution than a hillbilly with a wood burning stove, an old diesel generator, and a truck that gets 9 mpg. At least that dumb redneck can see the necessity (and fun) in turning trash into usable resources and building materials. He doesnt work his life away so he can afford to buy new future trash. A smart redneck (yes, they exist) can turn existing trash into a self-sustaining eco-village. Aint that right Terry? ;) So next time youre driving around in your hybrid to drop off your recyclables while priding yourself on how much good you are doing for the planet, look over at the broke-ass redneck in the truck next to you and realize he is probably doing far more for the planet than you are.
