Here is what I beliieve: Libertarianism appeals to three kinds of people. There are variations and differing degrees and some who fall into more than one category: A- Naive people/Single issue voters - people who havent looked too hard at Libertarian ideas or just heard Smoke dope? cool! B- Sociopaths - hate the working poor,want social darwinism. This includes anarchist/voluntaryists who may even claim that somehow it will be better when we turn over the government to corporations who offer infrastructure cheaply and efficiently C- Arbitrarians - people who actually arent even sure what they are, or are in truth Republicans but dont want to admit that. They tend to function with a lot of cognitive dissonance and make very circular arguments - often conflicting with the things they said. They often function in the abstract and hypothetical instead of the reality of things. This is why to them examples of libertarian ideas implemented that always fail arent True Libertarianism examples - Somalia, Haiti, Pakistan, Texas - these are technically not true examples of how REAL libertarian government will do nothing and watch as society as collapses and somehow their version of doing nothing will be different than a somalian/texas republican version.
