Here is what we are singing this Sunday at St Annes - come and check it out (especially at 11:15 when we are up front with the new David Moore positif organ). “If Ye Love Me” – Thomas Tallis This week’s anthem “If Ye Love Me” is one of my favorite anthems. It was written when Tallis was in the employ of the Chapel Royal while Edward VI was on the throne (1547-1553). In many ways this piece is a glimpse into the music of the beginning of the Anglican Church since it was during Edwards reign that Archbishop Cranmer would begin to write the first version of The Book of Common Prayer (still the basis for our Prayer Book today!) vital to establishing Protestantism in England. The simple setting of the words, (one note per syllable) were a part of this “new” Protestant aesthetic of removing excess. Here is a recording of it by the Cambridge Singers: https://youtube/watch?v=J6RgaPTo4hE --post written by J. Ernest Green
