Here it is my bottom ten films for 2014. Now this may not be the worst of the worst (as luckily I seem to have avoided what most reviewers have picked for the worst of the year). These just happen to be the ten lowest ranked movies on my list out of the ones that I saw. 10. 300: Rise of an Empire - The sequel/prequel or sidequel or whatever you want to call it of 300 was one of those unnecessary films that was made purely out of the fact that the original was such a surprise hit that the studio felt the need to make another one. Sure the visuals are cool, but not any more impressive than the first one. Most of the movie is forgettable and again while I wouldnt go so far as to say this was a terrible movie or even close to one, it just was one that didnt really do anything for me and it fell down the list as the year went on. 09. Tammy - Melissa McCarthy starred in this comedy/drama that had its moments, but ultimately suffered from veering away from the comedy. A solid cast which also included Susan Sarandon, Gary Cole, Kathy Bates, and a bit part by Dan Aykroyd wasnt enough to lift this higher on my list. 08. Ride Along - Kevin Hart got his year started with this buddy cop comedy with Ice Cube. Hart is now in everything. Yes this movie made money and yes there is a sequel coming, but it wasnt really original and seemed like something weve seen before. Yet another movie that wasnt terrible, but certainly I wont look at again. 07. Monuments Men - One of the truly disappointing films this year featured George Clooney directing and starring alongside a great ensemble including Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Cate Blanchett. This was a film set in WWII in which Clooney and company were to reclaim great art that was being taken by the Nazis. This could have been a fun picture ala the Oceans franchise with the guys going after the art, but it really was dull and boring and a waste of great talent. Sorry George. 06. Transformers: Age of Extinction - Another endless display of on-screen destruction with no reason to exist other then to sell more toys (and not even the good quality ones from the 1980s). They tried to freshen the franchise up with Mark Wahlberg instead of Shia LaBeouf, but this was another overbloated explosionfest from Michael Bay that ran way too long and ultimately the length of these films is a hinderence to these movies. I rather enjoyed the first Transformers films, but its been all downhill from there. I dont mind Michael Bay, but he needs to leave this franchise behind. 05. Brick Mansions - The last starring role for Paul Walker (not including the upcoming Furious 7) ultimately was not a very good one. This was a remake of a French action flick and it wasnt satisfying. 04. Lucy - Another disappointment in that Scarlett Johansson as a kick-ass action flick from Luc Besson should have been something great. It started out well enough, but went into some nonsensical mumbo that I couldnt get past. Morgan Freeman had the unfortunate task of also being cast in this. Something along the lines of Bessons previous efforts like the Professional and the Transporter would have made this something worth while. 03. The Rover - Guy Pearce starred in this Australian set film in a post apocalyptic world where all the man wanted was to get his car back that was stolen. Another premise which could have turned into a great hunt-down the men who took his car and went LIam Neeson on them, but instead it didnt end up anything like that. 02. Tusk - The first time in history that I have put a Kevin Smith film on my bottom list. Sure Cop Out was no prize (that was a Smith for hire picture as opposed to one of his own creations), but I was not won over by this horror-comedy about a crazy ma (Michael Parks) who wants to turn a man into a Walrus. There was some humor, but turned into a gross out film more then a horror flick. I think Smith should have either went heavily on the comedy or heavily on the horror, but it was stuck somewhere in the middle like two different films going on. Justin Long was the star here and even a goofy role by Johnny Depp only hurt the film in my opinion. 01. Dumb and Dumber To - My absolute least favorite film of the year was also the most disappointing.. Twenty years after the original hilarious film from the Farrelly Brothers came this really dumb (and not in a good way) film finally reuniting Jeff Daniels and JIm Carrey. What a let down. Tired jokes and nothing fresh. Felt flat and could have been so much more. What were your least favorite films from this past year? Post it in the comments section. Im sure Ill get plenty of disagreements on my list.
