Heres a brief blurb from my WIP, My Interview with Beethoven: Newspaper reporter George Thompson leaves his home in Virginia to interview the worlds greatest composer, Ludwig van Beethoven. George gets more than he bargains for. So does Beethoven. Georges beginning chapter: With my heavy trunk and valise full of reporter materials, I struggled down the narrow stairs to the sitting room. My stepfather – the man I once lovingly called Pa – stood at the front window, his back to me. He glared through my mother’s lace window curtains at his enemy: Johann Nepomuk Mälzel. Mälzel was no longer the phantom husband Grandpa Bekker cooked up twenty-three years ago, but was much alive. Mälzel awaited me from inside the coach parked in front of our house, while my distraught mother talked to him through the open coach window. Mälzel’s first visit to her six months ago aroused my stepfather’s darker side. His second visit occurred yesterday, when I stumbled home drunk. This morning, Mälzel came to whisk me to the docks. He would not step out to greet my stepfather in his usual merry way. He did not dare. I was leaving home finally to go to my natural father, Ludwig van Beethoven. No, not to just go to him, but to interview him. Through this journey I craved a pure beginning, without lies, spite, and harsh family secrets. Recent circumstances offered me no other choice. I had lost three precious things: my promotion to master printer, my sweetheart to a planter’s son, and my foolish attempt to buy back the Thompson plantation house. No, four: my fantasy to introduce steam printing in the South, a revolutionary venture. All brushed my fingertips – and now, all gone. ©2014 L.A. Jones Actors to star in my fantasy movie: Anthony Hopkins as the older Beethoven, Jim Sturgess as George because he looks just like him. Heres the house (in Williamsburg, Va.) that George is leaving.
