Heres a few more pic of the progress in are little part of the world . I noticed every time theres a post about the expansion theres a certain amount of melancholy and sense of loss, I guess its warranted. I have been thinking of others who suffered losses as well. Around 30 to 35 years ago I sat in my garage one night talking to my neighbor from across the street, his name was Steve Lewis they bought in 51-52, he was probably 7 to 8 years older than me. I remember seeing him jet through the neighbor hood on his blue an white moped when I couldnt leave the front yard, I asked my dad why do they call it a moped, he looked down at me smiled and said you do MO peddling than anything . Funny how so many things he had to say mirror what I hear people say today ,how things then were so much better then an everything is changing an not for the better, what he would think if he was here today . And remember him telling me when he got back from Vietnam for the first six months he would take his dads rifle and climb on the roof, a big tree hung over the house he would crouch down in the tree and sit till morning then go to sleep ,I asked him why ? He wore thick glasses that magnified his eyes made them piercing he looked me in the eye and he said looking for charlie man...looking for charlie . He got a box of photos and showed ones from when the neighbor hood was new . A couple I remember what was so weird there were so few cars, the trees were just sticks some houses had no fences, it looked like Monopoly houses on a game board . There was one looking due west down the street and there was no freeway just a cattle guard then a field he said you could see clear to whats now Stater bros. And some guy over there had a bunch donkeys you could hear them at night he said . This neighbor hood is broke up in three groups, 3 bedroom 1 bath single car garage on slab another third the same except they were raised foundation and double car built in the 60s, then the school Cresson elementary. Steve would ride his bike down there where the school is now and there was a Chinese family he said they wore silk pajamas and wooden shoes . They couldnt talk to each other but they fed me and let me play with their animals he said .I guess it was like a little farm . But one day he went an a bulldozer flatten the place and they started on the school .He said he came home an cried because he never got to say good by .I wonder if the people had a choice or did they have to move . Another case was when I was little a old Mexican lady in a red pickup would drive through the neighbor hood selling ice cream ,the truck leaned to one side like one of the springs was broke .You could see where she lived on Pioneer BL. in a little white house on a big lot just before the Stop n go, its apartments now .My dad told me her family once owned most of what is the neighbor hood today, then under his breath muttered till the bastards taxes her out of it . I worked with a woman who said her grand parents own most of the neighbor hood off Florence across from old Pendleton base ball field you might remember the street Ringwood . She said the same thing happened to them . So it might not make others losses any easier to take but youer not alone .Wished I had something more cheery to say thought maybe someone would find it of interest.
