Heres a fun new highlight of my filmmaking career: Below is a commercial Joanna and I made to promote Belikin Bash -- a huge, three-day concert series in Belize. We edited the ad together from footage we shot onstage at last years concert, and chose a song by the big headliner of the weekend, Supa G. Heres where it gets fun: Supa G didnt perform this song at last years concert. He hadnt even recorded it yet. But, since we loved the track, we put a lot of effort into creating the illusion that Supa G walks out on stage, pauses, then launches into this fantastic song. Im sorry for deceiving you, but thats basically my job. CUT TO: this past Saturday night. Once again I was filming Belikin Bash, and once again I was backstage filming Supa G before his headlining performance. I asked him if hed be performing the song from the commercial, and he said, Of course! That commercial made the song a hit! Im opening with it! A minute later we could hear the song beginning. Then he walked out on stage, and I followed him with my camera just like I had the year before. When he reached the front of the stage, the music stopped, and he looked out at the screaming audience. And then, three seconds later, he and the band launched right back into the song. What a weird, glorious, dizzying feeling that was for me. It had taken me a week of painstaking editing to create the illusion of the EXACT moment that I was now experiencing live in person.
