Heres a great young quintet live from Dizzys Club Coca Cola. Connie Crothers posted this and also mentioned in her post that this group was fired midway through their stand at Dizzys. I can see no musical justification for that action, based on the clip I heard. Im copying her original post below.... In the middle of a week engagement at Dizzys Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the young alto saxophone player Aaron Johnson was fired for playing jazz. The stated reason was, This is not the right vibe for this room. I wrote a letter protesting this action, but didnt receive an answer. In my letter, I wrote that one purpose of the organization is to encourage young musicians. Another purpose of this organization is to give musicians a place to perform where they can be assured of being treated with respect, rather than have to deal with the disrespect that they can encounter in some jazz clubs and other venues. The capriciousness of Aarons dismissal goes against both of these stated aims. Since being fired, Jazz at Lincoln Center hired Aaron to perform in a big band performance in the lead alto saxophone chair, a proof that his playing level is valued. He just cant bring in his band. I was at this engagement. The band was on fire, swinging hard and playing surprising and exciting music. The audience was enthusiastic. Here are two examples of the music that transpired during that engagement. https://youtube/watch?v=WaOQbuRpfnQ https://youtube/watch?v=X4Hf-e_4eQ0
