Heres a quote from an article from the radio times not sure what year. Sometimes on a wintry Sunday morning the people of Compstall near Stockport in Cheshire are treated to the site of a man floundering wildly about in the stream at the bottom of the village. A stranger might assume he had fallen in and was drowning, but the locals know better, they would tell you that the man had scrambled down the bank from the George, and was in the water looking for his wood. A wood is something you play bowls with, and the George, a picturesque place on the lip of the brook, is the pub where they play it. Walk up to the George however and you will be confronted with a Bowling Green quite unlike any you may have seen before. most of us think of bowling greens as manicured emerald lawns, flat as tennis courts, but the green at the George Compstall looks like a piece of agricultural land on which sheep have been grazing. And that is just as it should be, the bowlers would not have it any other way. Because this is crown green bowling and crown green bowling is a hard game for Hard men, with as much relation to ordinary bowls as gorilla warfare to morris dancing.
