Heres a thought.... during my research into my family tree, I found numerous spellings of our surname. During the early census records, Scribes attenede at households to record family details for the census. Many people couldnt read or write so the name was written as the Scribe thought it should be. Also, some people may will have been asked how do you spell that? and some would reply would have been with an e (meaning an e after the H)... some Scribes would have thought it meant with an e as the second last letter therefore Heys became Heyes and Hays became Hayes... or if the Scribe did assume the householder meant the second letter was e, then Hays or Hayes became Heys or Heyes!! To illustrate that, my great Grandfather was record as Heys on his birth certifcate, in a later census he was recorded as Hayes and on his marriage certificate as Heyes..... fortunately, I havent come across the spelling Haze yet!!!
