Heres an opinion piece from one of our members Mike Murphy published in todays Milwaukee Journal on the positive aspects of building the Keystone pipeline. Approve Keystone pipeline During his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama said he will not hesitate to use his pen and phone during his year of action. Well, one item for which he can certainly use his pen to take action and help create thousands of jobs would be to approve construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Recent polling shows that Americans overwhelmingly support building the pipeline. They recognize how important this project is not only to our nations energy security but also our economic security and national security. The State Departments own data indicates that more than 42,000 jobs will be created and $2 billion in wages generated once this project is finally allowed to move forward. Furthermore, manufacturers like those in Wisconsin who rely on oil to maintain their operations and transport their goods around the world could benefit substantially from having a more reliable source of energy available to them from a stable country such as Canada. Frankly, Obama and his environmental allies need to realize just how important oil is in keeping Americas economic engine running. And the more they hamper progress on the Keystone XL, the more damage theyre inflicting on the American economy. Michael S.
