Heres another example of the internet pushing photography - TopicsExpress

Heres another example of the internet pushing photography sideways. Of the finalists, 38 are horizontals and 5 are verticals. But the contest isnt called the Internet Wildlife Photog of the Year, its just called the Wildlife Photog of the Year. Since most contest judges, art directors, photo editors, and buyers need to be thinking about how stuff looks on the web and not just on a wall in a gallery, theyre naturally going to favor the landscape format—many to the total exclusion of anything else. It seems like such a stupid, obvious thing, but for people who want to make a living shooting editorial or commercial work—or who want to get onto the top of NGs Your Shot page—it means changing the way you see. When I know the picture is headed for the web, the question I find myself asking is no longer, How will this look best but How can I make this work as a landscape. Thats only been in the last year, really, and I feel like I was the last person in the world to notice this. Apparently, the World Press Photo judges have the same bias: worldpressphoto.org/awards/2014
