Heres my overall impression from the school supply conversation: We are teaching our children to consume and failing to teach them to conserve. A box of Kleenex used by lunchtime? Im thinking each tissue is not full of snot before it hits the trash can. Fill that sucker up with boogers before you toss it. ONE child asked to bring in TWENTY FOUR glue sticks? Hell no. Bucket o paste, anyone? Bowl of glue with paint brushes? Oh, it made a mess. Maybe use one of the wipes from the four containers I just provided. If there isnt a lot of glue in glue sticks then why are we being asked to purchase them? We are being asked to provide what seem to essentially be disposable school supplies during a time that few families have the disposable income to do so. Teachers shouldnt foot the bill, either, but placing the burden on middle class families and asking them to carry not only the Title 1 families but the school district as well does not make good economic sense to me. There are other and better ways to do this so that every child has what they need for school and certain families are not treated as an external bank account by the school.
