Heres the blurb about our concert in October. We reckoned it was our best - standard of singing was really good! We all enjoyed the Holst Ave Maria in particular but it was all great music. And Verdi with Dufay worked! CONCERT by CANTILENA The phrase ‘magical music making’ has been used many times about the Horsham based vocal ensemble Cantilena. They have become known for their high quality performances of music in a wide variety of styles, from plainsong to barbershop. The sound of female voices singing in close harmony is something to be experienced: if you haven’t tried it then come and join Cantilena’s regular followers at their next concert on Saturday 11th October at 7.30 pm in St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath where you will find a lovely acoustic, comfortable chairs and beautiful singing, plus refreshments after the concert! The programme, Hymns to the Virgin, celebrates the wealth of wonderful music written in honour of the Virgin Mary, spanning ten centuries. Director Jenny Hansell says ‘ It was really difficult to whittle down the possible pieces to a programmable length as there is so much lovely music to choose from. Most of the pieces were originally written for high voices and we have works by well known composers, Verdi and Holst, as well as less familiar ones such as Dufay and Charpentier, the latter being a particular favourite of mine. It is not often that you will hear Verdi and Dufay in the same concert!’ The group has had a busy year, with their usual Carols for Candlemas concert in February, followed by a succesful concert in Cranleigh in May which was a floral themed programme of secular music celebrating Cranleigh in Bloom. Over the August Bank Holiday weekend they sang the services in Chichester Cathedral. Hymns to the Virgin is the last concert of this season so don’t miss the opportunity to hear this talented ensemble. Tickets are £12 and are available from cantilena.info@gmail or 01483 275489
