Heres what Im thinking about as I go about my day today: Relationships. All relationships, romantic, familial, friendships, are (ideally) based on an exchange of gifts. Not gifts in the material sense, but gifts of love, and gifts of service. What form those gifts take is entirely unique to each individual - we all have different talents, feelings, and skillsets, but I think in a good relationship these gifts are exchanged. Now mind you, theres no scoreboard, no keeping track of who gives what. The act of giving to someone makes us feel good. The receiving of that kind of gift engenders a desire to give back in return. Thus begins a cycle of gifting of love and service that builds and solidifies the intimacy between people. Its a delicate balance though. If we give and give and give, and receive little or nothing in return, the desire to give withers and dies. it becomes resentment and anger. The trick I think is to let those relationships go before that point. Hold onto the ones in which you are receiving and giving gifts of love and service. Up and down, back and forth - these things ebb and flow like the tide, but in the end, overall, youll know when its worth it...:)
