Heres whats a little weird to me watching videos of current lines. Ok, many of them are super clean. Thats good. But youll see them raise their sticks way off the head and then come down with what should be a huge accent and... (pop). The accents are a little louder than the taps, but not in scale with the physical effort the players are putting into it. The only way snares can play a real accent now is with a rimshot- which is why you hear so many of them. This is true even for the lines that use a wetter tuning that provides more snare sound. That isnt the case with the tenors or bass drums. You can hear tenor and bass accents because in contrast with snares theyre playing on mylar heads that respond to accent strokes. Nothing wrong with rimshots. But they arent a substitute for playing on an instrument that can project a real accent note.
