Heres your look at this week in history from the archives of the Reporter-Herald: 10 Years Ago • Struggling financially, the owner of the Wilderness Ranch Sanctuary for Farm Animals in Buckhorn Canyon said she was shutting down the refuge. She said she had found new homes for many of the animals, and the 68 remaining were being taken in by Creative Acres in Brighton. • Thompson School District officials said they wanted to buy new video equipment to allow them to begin broadcasting school board meetings when they moved to the new school administration offices on South Taft Avenue. • A Fort Collins fifth-grader spoke to the Larimer County commissioners, asking them to consider enacting a lighting code in the county that would reduce light pollution. • Larimer County officials began talks with John Q. Hammons to build an Embassy Suites hotel and convention center near The Ranch. 25 Years Ago • The city of Loveland, Lake Loveland Recreation Club and Greeley-Loveland Irrigation Co. reached an agreement for improvements at the lake. They included reconstructing the outlet tube at the south end of the lake and using lake bed material to expand South Shore Park. • The city of Loveland received the 1989 Preservation Excellence Award from the nonprofit Colorado Preservation Inc. for preserving the old Washington School as part of the development of the Civic Center. • With low water, the recreation outlook at Boyd Lake was bleak, officials said, without enough water to open the swim beach and probably not enough to operate the boat ramp at the marina past July 4. • The Rev. Sathi Bunyan of All Saints Episcopal Church recalled having worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India, grueling days that began with meditation at 4:30 a.m. and heading out to the streets or the mission from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. or later to work with runaway boys. The well-known nun was visiting Denver, where she announced plans to establish a mission in the city. 50 Years Ago • “He liked corncob pipes ... but didn’t like shoes,” was among the tips organizers of the Huck Finn Day offered to Loveland kids planning to dress up for the annual kids’ fishing event. About 500 children attended the event.
