Here’s a special tribute to the Fort Collins High School class - TopicsExpress

Here’s a special tribute to the Fort Collins High School class of 1964. Their 50 year class reunion is happening this week. What is the most notable feature about this fabulous class? Fort Collins High School had many contributions to the community during school year 1963-64, but I would contend that there is one significant feature which will forever set them aside from all other high school graduating classes in Fort Collins. What is that feature? The FCHS class of 1964 will forever be the last single class to graduate from the only high school in Fort Collins! FCHS had more than 1,600 students in school year 1963-64, with staggered starting and ending times to accommodate the demand of an enormous student body. The explosive growth of Fort Collins and Larimer County was addressed by the school board of the Poudre R-1 School District. Construction of a new high school in Fort Collins to be named Poudre High School (PHS) was started during school year 1963-64. The new Poudre High School was ready and opened in September 1964, for school year 1964-65. The somewhat controversial high school boundary line adopted by the Poudre R-1 board of education followed Meldrum Street going north through town, angling to the “Y” (the intersection of US Highway 287 and Colorado Highway 14), then going east along Country Club Road. All students to the west and north of the dividing line went to PHS, while all students to the east and south of the dividing line went to FCHS. There was not a choice option during that era. Therefore, some families actually moved from one side of town to the other to accommodate the desires of their children to attend their preferred high school. The following comments contain some of my fond memories regarding my junior year at FCHS for school year 1963-64.
