Here’s a video we just shot in Baylor Fredrickon’s room at the Oakland Children’s hospital. I hadn’t seen him since the end of our last little league season, and wanted to pay him a call before he started his next round of chemotherapy, as it will cause him to feel very ill and not himself. I told him the first Facebook post about his plight has reached more than 28 million people in just the past two weeks—and that thousands of total strangers have been in touch with the Asian American Donor Society, and Be The Match.Org, to try to save his life. I’m pretty sure he had no idea what to make of these numbers; on the other hand when I showed him how to throw a curveball he was fully alert. Baylor needs, quickly, to find a bone marrow donor. That person will almost certainly be, like Baylor, half Caucasian and half Asian. The search for Baylor’s match seems to me the perfect use of social media, It’s an SOS message in a billion bottles. At any rate, if you are reading this you can actually help to save the life of seven year old Baylor Fredrickson. If you happen to be half Asian and half Caucasian, and between the ages of 18-44, order a bone marrow donor test kit from the Asian American Donor Program. (See instructions in the previous post.) If you happen not to be half Asian and half Caucasian you can forward this message to people who are, or to people who might know people who are.
