Here’s all of the INFO you NEED to ENTER our John Hartford Memorial Festival Songwriting and Old Time Fiddle Contests! Read on.... John Hartford Song Writing Contest Rules and Information: *What are the rules of the contest?* Song lyrics must mention one of the following subjects: -John Hartford -At least one of John Hartfords song titles. Submit acoustic, lyrical songs only. Instrumental breaks are not necessary and will not be figured in the scoring. Songs must be less than five minutes in length. Song entry must match performers capability: you must enter the song in the same way you will be allowed to perform it if you win. In other words, do not submit a whopper of a studio production. Submit what you could perform on stage as listed in these guidelines. Lyrics must be typed. If using a John Hartford song title, it must be listed on the lyric sheet, right under the title of your entry. Lyric sheet, MP3 recording, and entry fee must be submitted according to the submission guidelines (below). You may enter the song you entered in our previous contest as long as it was not the first place song. Entrants retain all rights to their songs. *How will my song(s) be judged?* Songs will be judged on originality, melody, and lyrical content - NOT on performance. The point system used for judging is shown below, with a maximum of 500 points. Judging & Point System: 1. Song Originality -- 100 points 2. Melodic Presence -- 100 points 3. Quality of the Lyric Hook -- 100 points 4. Quality of Lyric Subject Matter -- 100 points 5. Quality of Lyric Structure -- 100 points *How do I submit my song(s)?* 1. Email your Registration Information and MP3 file of your song to [email protected]. Only MP3 files will be listened to. Registration Information: a. Name b. Mailing address c. Telephone number d. Way to contact you on-site during the festival in case of schedule changes e. Song title f. Song lyrics g. Please tell us how you learned about our contest. 2. Submit your payment to the website via the provision to pay listed at the website. Under the heading “JHMF IV TICKETS” is a field that says, “3 Day ticket $100.00 USD”. Enter as many songs as you would like. *What does it cost to enter my song(s)?* A $10 entry fee must be submitted for each song entry. Entry fees for multiple entries may be combined into one payment. *What is the timeline for entry?* Entries for the contest may be submitted between now and Sunday, May 4th, 2014 at midnight. CST? How will winners be announced and contacted? The winners of the Songwriting Contest will be announced via johnhartfordmemfest, the JHMF Facebook page, and this contest page shortly after the entry deadline – Sunday, May 4th, 2014 at midnight CST?. Winners will be contacted via telephone and/or email. *What could I win?* 1. Performance in the Songwriting Showcase: The 1st place winner will perform two songs - the winning song and a song of his/her choice. 2nd place through 7th place entrants will perform their entries also. 2. Digital Publication: The winning song entries will be posted on the JHMF website for public listening and viewing. 3. Additional prizes: 1st place wins two full festival tickets and a hand-made trophy plaque. 2nd place and 3rd place win two full festival tickets. *Additional prizes may be added leading up to the festival.* If winners cannot attend the festival, they may still claim their place on their résumés or websites; however, they will forfeit their prizes to next highest scorer who is present at the festival. Contestants who purchase tickets in advance and win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place passes will be reimbursed their ticket cost at the gate upon presenting proof of entry and identification. The gate personnel will verify these. Booked entertainers who win tickets may transfer their tickets to someone else. This must be done by email to John Hotze at [email protected] no later than ten days before the festival. *What are the rules for the Songwriting Showcase performances?* The top 7 winners may perform solo or with up to three accompanists. Winners must perform into a single mic provided by our professional sound crew using acoustic instruments only (no drums). You will not be allowed to plug in your instruments. If you are a performer at JHMF IV, you must check your performance schedule with the songwriters showcase schedule to assure that they do not conflict. *When will the Songwriting Showcase take place?* The showcase will be held at 11:30am – 12:30pm on Friday at the Main Stage, Festival Standard Time. *Questions?* Keep checking the John Hartford Memorial Festival Songwriting and Old Time Fiddle Contest Facebook page for updates. If you have more questions, email ernpick@gmail. **JOHN HARTFORD OLD TIME FIDDLE CONTEST** *Where and when will the Fiddle Contest be held?* The contest will be held on the Boogie stage on Saturday, May 31st, 2014 at 11:30 am. *How do I enter?* You may enter online beginning Feb 1st by visiting johnhartfordmemfest and following the instructions there. Registration is $10.00. Online registration will close when our field is full with 12 contestants or May 4th, 2014, at midnight. If the field is not full with 12 contestants we will continue with on site registration which will begin at 11:00 am outside the Boogie stage and end at 11:20 am. after which contestants will draw numbers for order. All fiddlers will be allowed to compete regardless of age or skill level. Fiddlers that are booked at JHMF are eligible to compete as long as their performance schedules do not conflict with the contest schedule. *Please read the rules* 1. Each contestant will play two songs of choice. Acoustic fiddles only. 2. Cross tuning is allowed. Contestants will be allowed one minute between songs to adjust tuning. Fiddlers may use more than one fiddle to accommodate cross tunings. 3.The contestants will not be allowed to speak. 4. Fiddlers may have one accompanist which will not be miked. 5. Total time for each contestant to perform both songs will be no more than five minutes. 6.Fancy fiddling or Texas Swing fiddling will not be awarded points. Playing Crooked fiddle tunes is encouraged but will bear no extra weight to the judges scoring. 7.The judges decision is final. 8.1st place wins $100.00 and a hand-made trophy plaque. 9. 2nd place wins $50 10. 3rd place wins $25 Additional prizes may be added leading up to the festival.
