Here’s another little ‘Incident’ plucked from my memory-bank - TopicsExpress

Here’s another little ‘Incident’ plucked from my memory-bank from my childhood days… It came about when I had swopped a couple of DC comics for a rabbit. Now, I knew of old that if my father had seen it, we would have all had rabbit stew for the next week. He was that kind of man, spiteful as sin and nasty with it. Do you know, for a good part of my young life, I thought my real name was ‘Gertcha Cowson!’. Anyways, getting away from the story, I hid the rabbit in a box in the coal cupboard during the day and crept downstairs at night to let it out in the back yard. Now, and here’s the crux of the story… My mother was one of those women who carried around with her a large brown carrier bag, in which was stuffed an assortment of pills and medicines, enough to stock a chemist, whatever the ailment, she had the cure for it in the carrier bag. One morning, having hid the rabbit, I saw my mother in the back yard and she was bending down, picking up the rabbit droppings and putting then in a small box. Seeing my head poking round the door, she shouted … ‘Have you been at my Cod Liver Oil Tablets?’ Now… I don’t know about you, but me…! I took the rabbit to school and swopped it for a school cap which had our school badge on it. And as for my mother, she never said a word about the rabbit droppings and I wasn’t going to ask!
