Heritage Convent charged with violating RTE Imphal, July 03 2014: A girl student of Heritage Convent School in Uripok here was allegedly expelled from the school in connection with the incident of lost of exercise book belonging to one of her classmates. In a press conference at the office of Human Right Law Network at Paona Bazar here today, the father of the aggrieved student told reporters that his daughter who is now in class VII has been studying in the Heritage Convent right from the Pre-Nursery class. She has been unreasonably charged for the lost of an exercise book for civics subject belonging to another student sitting on the same bench, he alleged. The father of the student said that her daughter had only passed on the exercise book to another student of the same bench, as she was asked to do so. On July 1 last, Loitam Chanchal, the Coordinator of the school marked on her school diary that she was suspended from school with effect from July 2 till July 18 . In connection with the incident, W.Joykumar, Executive Director of Human Rights Initiative and Advocate Rakesh of Human Right Law Network went to meet the principal of the school on July 2, but they were not allowed, informed the father and added that a complaint was also lodged to the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) through the HRLN. Accordingly, the MCPCR issued an interim order to enable the student to attend school from 8 am on July 3.When the student was brought to the school along with the interim order, one coordinator of the school Rebika informed that the student cannot attend school without the approval of school authority and asked to discuss with the school authority at 11.30 am, the father narrated. Informing that the girl has been insulted and it may amount to her loss of academic career, the father drew the attention of all concerned to the incident of suspension of his daughter from school on false charges. .WJoykumar of HRLN said that Heritage Convent School has spoiled the academic career of a student and violated the provisions of RTE by expelling the student on certain false charges. Following a complaint to the MCPCR, the principal and the Co-ordinator of the school Chanchal have been summoned by the Commission on 7 July at 10 am, he said. Joykumar warned that legal proceedings would follow, unless the school authority cancels the suspension of the student. He further charged that the private schools in Manipur do not follow the RTE provisions contrary to the claim made by the Education Minister. Demanding cancellation of affiliation for the schools that violate RTE provisions, Joykumar appealed to parents not to send their children to private schools, if they do not follow the RTE provisions. e-pao.net/GP.asp?src=25..040714.jul14
