Heroin abuse in the U.S. has explode. Between 2006 &2010, heroin overdose deaths rose 45%. In 2007, an estimated 373,000 users in America, but today, that number has nearly doubled. Among U.S. heroin users, Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 represent the largest, most rapidly growing group. Cheap, readily available, dangerously potent, and highly addictive, heroin has replaced expensive opioid painkillers like Vicodin, Percocet, and Oxycontin as a party drug of choice among the young in towns small and large, working-class and affluent. The faces of the epidemic speak to its staggering reach: Straight-A students, children of privilege, and decorated war veterans have all fallen victim.
