Hey Everyone! There have been requests to see that list I made a long time ago to describe all the residence halls so here you go: Okay, so it basically depends on what you want. Do you want a more social residential hall? Then Santa Catalina is the way to go. Do you want to be close to campus? Then any residence hall other than Santa Catalina is the way to go. Do you want a hall with a nearby pool? Then Manzanita Village or Santa Catalina is the way to go. Ill go ahead and give short descriptions of each ***Santa Catalina (where I live so its the most familar): - definitely social - has its own pool, dining commons (my least favorite one but still has one), fitness center, and private bathrooms - a mix of doubles and triples - bathrooms are shared between two rooms (to form a suite of 5 total people) - lots of study rooms - ResNet office, a RHA office, a UCPD/CSO satellite office, a counseling center, a computer lab, a wellness center with massage chair, and multiple study rooms - the furthest away from the middle of campus that you can get (requires you to either be okay with busing or biking or the occasional walking of about 1.3 miles) - consists of two 10 story towers - all freshmen dorm - it has the Outdoor Adventure, Multicultural Experience, Scholars, Wellness, and Substance-Free living-learning communities - the one I am currently living in and I rather like living here! ***Manzanita Village: - the newest residence hall - for those interested in a family style of housing where 3-4 story buildings consist of 50-60 students each - contains study rooms, a fully function kitchen and attached lounge, a loft, laundry/vending rooms, balconies, and private bathrooms/showers - you will experience living in Manzanita at orientation over summer - some houses have views of the ocean - a short walk away from campus point and Carrillo Dining Commons - the closet you can get to IV - contains the Scholars, Rainbow House, Multicultural Experience, Women in Science & Technology, College of Creative Studies House, and Global Living Experience living learning communities - best if you dont mind mixing with upperclassmen because only 1/4 of the students there are freshmen (around 150-250 out of about 900) - buildings include a lobby area, laundry/vending room, lounge with view terrace, study room, and kitchenettes - BBQs, sand volleyball courts, and the Carrillo swimming pool - has multiple centers nearby that are used for recreational activities and study spaces - for those who want a more quiet style of living - the DeAnza Center is a good resource for quiet place for studying or using the computer lab - personally, I really like the location and layout of this residence hall The remaining five available for freshmen are called the Kai five and are all located by each other in a sort of pentagon shape. ***Anacapa: - close by the beach - mostly triple rooms with some doubles - freshman only dorm - many rooms have views of the ocean and mountains - a two story building - floors are co-ed with men and women in separate wings - communal bathrooms on each wing - know to be rather social - recreation room, sand volleyball court, an upright piano, outdoor patio furniture, a large community lounge for events and studying, a classroom, and access to the Carrillo swimming pool - contains the Scholars, Asian & Pacific Islander Scholars living learning communities - good if you dont want to live in a large dorm and want a freshmen experience - close by the De La Guerra dining commons (my favorite and the most popular one) ***Santa Cruz: - all freshmen - close by Campus Point beach - basically the same layout/design as Anacapa and Santa Rosa - contains the Substance-Free, First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) living learning communities - each floor has a study lounge and kitchette - recreation room, TV lounge, an upright piano, a large community lounge for events and studying, outdoor patio furniture, a classroom, access to the Carrillo swimming pool, a surf shower, and a sand volleyball court - nice views! - mostly triples with some doubles - single gender, communal bathrooms in each wing - good location by De La Guerra ***Santa Rosa: - similar set up to Santa Cruz and Anacapa - closest to the center of campus - nearby the University Center and Library and College of Creative Studies - has its own fitness center - recreation room, a Steinway piano, an outdoor courtyard with a BBQ grill and benches, a large community lounge for events and studying, a classroom with a smart board, access to the Carrillo swimming pool, and a sand volleyball court and basketball court - large, single gender communal bathrooms - mostly triples with some doubles - contains the Black/African-American Scholars, and Wellness living learning communties - a rather popular choice and close to buildings where you will have classes ***San Miguel: - two 8 story building with 24-25 students on each floor - men and women are separated by alternating floors - mainly doubles with some singles - each floor offers a study lounge and kitchenette - right next to the Ortega Dining Commons and very close to the University Center - contains the Scholars, Creative & Performing Arts, Chican@/Latin@ Scholars, and Environmental living learning communities - recreation room, professional grade sand volleyball court with buffer zone, an outdoor stage, outdoor patio furniture, a fitness room, BBQs, a community lounge for events and studying, a classroom, access to the Carrillo swimming pool, and an upright piano - a good layout and a good choice if you want to be steps away from a dining common and close to the always helpful UCen - has nice views of the lagoon ***San Nicholas: - similar to San Miguel as it is a building with 8 floors - has the best views - co-ed floors with men and women on separate wings - contains the Scholars living learning communities - close to Ortega and DLG Dining Commons - two large, single gender communal bathrooms on each floor - recreation room, ResNet center, RHA office, outdoor patio furniture, access to the Carrillo swimming pool, a classroom, an upright piano, a sand volleyball court, and a community lounge for studying and events - mostly doubles with some singles and triples - about 5 minutes from the beach - where you will stay if you attend the Freshman Summer Start Program - I recommend this if you are trying to do the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP) as you will already be living with the new friends you made over summer - at the same time, if you dont go to FSSP, you may be living with people who already have established friendships
