Hey UChicago! Meet Christian Sanchez How I identify: Mexican-American, Woman, Latina, Dancer, Artist, Activist, Cynic, Feminist, Romantic. This campus has made me deeply reflect on my identity and how others perceive me. I am a woman and I am Mexican-American. Spring term of my first year, two incidents involving Fraternities on campus made me question if I even belonged at UChicago. The reaction many of my peers had to those incidents disturbed me. In their opinion I was oversensitive at best. They didnt pause to seriously consider how these incidents affected me and others like me. Their privilege allowed them ignorance and allowed them to deny my lived experience. This trend has continued throughout my time here at the University and it makes me sad. Ive worked hard to come into my own as an academic and a student here, but I would say that my education has largely been shaped by moments that have put my identity in question. By this I mean I have been forced to examine who I am often within the context of power and privilege and have concluded enlightening things about myself. At times these realizations have made me feel hopeless. I have been brought to tears by the apathy of this University and my peers. Despite the difficult moments I have had at UChicago, these have helped me solidify myself as a proud Latina and as someone who will not stop working for those who might feel silenced on this campus. The perceptions others may have of me, Ill admit, make me curious but they no longer make me question my self-worth Submit your own story here and share this link with friends: https://docs.google/forms/d/1j1w6XeQIxXlYnPSoU2gVL0mJ6fzFJFWJ7j8BdLaQXGI/viewform Visit the Website to see what events we have planned and what the art installation is going to look like uchicagoidentity.strikingly/
