‘Hey, Uncle Charles, you know how to lie!’ Nancy laughed for the first time since she came back from Banana Cove. ‘Well, that is not entirely a lie, is it? The phone is missing ... so, I suppose, that is ... the best you could say.’ Suddenly he became bold and thought that it might be useful for him to learn what really had befallen the girl the night before. He asked, ‘Why don’t you tell Uncle Charles what exactly happened last night?’ For a while the girl kept silent then she squeezed out, ‘You don’t want to know.’
