Hey all, welcome to Evocca College! I look forward to speaking with you all individually, but for you hungry future game developers out there Ive compiled a list of websites that are very important for game developers. I highly recommend you add these sites to your favorites and read a few articles! Ill be posting up my favorite articles occasionally. If you guys have other recommendations please post them down in the comments and Ill add them to the list! Thanks everybody and keep up the good work! Websites: Gamasutra is a compilation of blogs, editorials, and reviews that discuss current trends, progress, and thoughts about the game industry. While many of its writers are seasoned game devs, Ive personally had a friend or two submit an article and have it end up on their front page. If you guys have a blog and have a particularly interesting viewpoint on a topic or game send it off their way!- gamasutra/ Polycount is a forum site for artists to post, critique and share art. While this site is primarily for artists, it can be an excellent resource for recieving feedback if you have greyboxed a level or are placing assets and want an artists eye to look over your work.- polycount/forum/ Game Career Guide is a wonderful resource not only for its lively community and informational articles, but it also hosts Game Design Challenges. These can be great excercises to practice your design skill and have it critiqued in-front of professionals and juniors alike. If you have a particularly innovative design then you can even win which is a nice bonus to have on the bottom of a Resume. - gamecareerguide/ Khan Academy is your one-stop resource for tutorials on maths, science, and more. This is a great go to if you are struggling to keep up with the pace our programming class are racing by. - https://khanacademy.org/ Resources: Industry Statistics and Fact Sheet - theesa/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2013.pdf Art/Design Tutorials - While I know very few of you are interested in becoming artists, learning photoshop and basic art principles can be an invaluable toolset to have at your disposal. - floobynooby/ICG/artvalues.html GameDev Map - Shows some (but not all) studios around the world. Theres no reason that you should be applying everywhere both national and internationally. - gamedevmap/ Historical Costume Design - Another link for those who are artistically minded, this resource is also excellent for designers who really want to capture the authentic look and feel from various eras throughout history. Its absolutely free, and provides a treasure trove of amazing insight for both artists and designers!- artbypapercut/ C++ Cheat Sheet - Im not sure what kind of scripting or coding work youll be expected to know in this course, but this is a helpful cheat sheet if you guys are trying to make heads or tails of code and there arent enough //comments to make heads or tails of things. Controller + Button Layout - Good resource for if you guys are creating a controls page in your design documents.- puu.sh/7bBk0 IOS Resolutions - Probably more important to artists and programmers but still quality information to have on file.- iosres/ Modeling Minute - A compilation of modeling tutorials each 1 minute in length.- vimeo/channels/modelingminute MakeHuman 1.0 - Excellent for quick mock ups and character experimentation. This is to be used a reference primarily and not for actual game development/assessment purposes.- gamefromscratch/post/2014/03/15/MakeHuman-100-finally-released.aspx WolFramAlpha - A great mathematics tool to assist programmers with formulas and advanced maths. - wolframalpha Psychology In Games - A great read for aspiring designers. It discusses psychology and common trends, mechanics, and more in games! - psychologyofgames Channels & Talks: Extra Credits is my #1 go to channel for industry insight. It is run by some esteemed games educators and professionals and covers trends, education, and the industry at large. Subscribe to it!-https://youtube/channel/UCCODtTcd5M1JavPCOr_Uydg PBS Game Show is a newer channel but the main guy is sharp and likes to challenge industry trends. While I canot speak for the rest of her videos, I respect her exploration of femininityh in games. I recommend her Tropes vs. Women in Video Games series. - https://youtube/channel/UC7Edgk9RxP7Fm7vjQ1d-cDA Jane McGonigal is a role model in furthering the acceptance and potential for games as a new culture. This is one of her most well-known talks on Games and their effects on culture. I highly recommend everyone check out her many other talks and books. Message Bretton Hamilton if you want to borrow her book Reality is Broken.-ted/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html Jesse Schell is one of the most well respected game designers of the past decade. He is the writer of my personal game design bible A Book of Lenses and I cannot recommend it enough as a resource.
