Hey all you freshpeople on your way to new lives, especially the lot of you who are leaving home for the first time, I have a small bit of advice: 1. Pack light but pack smart. You dont need every outfit. Think of clothes that have multi purposes and that you actually love and pack those things. If you choose to bring everything, youll have so much random junk in your dorm and youLl have no idea where it came from and youll just be pissed that you have too many things and this is a run on sentence. 2. For those of you who are going to experience seasons for the first time, buy yourself a good wool coat and rubber boots (especially if youre going to live in the northeast). Every morning you will decide between looking cute and being warm. You will choose warm every single time. If youre bring your car, buy a snow brush ice pick thing. 3. You never have to be someone youre not or do something youre not comfortable with. If you dont want to drink on a Wednesday but all of your new friends do, thats fine. Never compromise your priorities or your integrity. Be brave enough to be who you are and youll find friends who respect that. 4. On the other hand, have the courage to make new friends, and to let people go. Youll find yourself making and losing friends extremely fast. Thats normal. Trust your gut. Everyone is so eager make friends, all you have to do is say hello. If you find yourself in the wrong group of people and you want out, be forward but be kind. Always keep in mind whats best for you. 5. Text your parents whenever you can. Especially if they are footing any part of the bill. If not your parents, anyone you may have left at home. Just because you leave the city, does not mean the love in that relationship ends. Show them that you remember them and still appreciate them from far away. 5. Exploit all the resources on campus. Go to the gym. Use all of your print credits. Meet with all of your counselors, academic and otherwise. Get all the free snacks. Your tuition covers it so get your moneys worth. 6. It is totally fine to have fun and get crazy. But remember that youre doing this for you. You get the exact amount that you put in to this experience. The farmer that sows sparingly, reaps sparingly. 7. Being scared and overwhelmed is completely normal. Talk it out. Dont keep it bottled up or all the stress will come spewing out of you. Dont let it get it to that point. See number five, exploit your resources and get an appointment with some counselors. I guess that was more than a little. So yeah. Be brave. Be kind. All of you are fully capable of success. So why the hell not?
