Hey everybody!! We’re working on a little ‘project’ of sorts over here! I am going to start an educational project, mainly geared for kids aged 4-10 (I will take a MATURE 3 year old who is COMPLETELY potty trained and will take an older kid if it is a good fit) at this point (much more to come. . .). I am offering a complete program as well as a part-time program in my home (I live on a cul-de-sac and have a big backyard in the NW). My goal here is to find those families who are looking for an alternative form of education for their kids, but would still like to take a ‘communal’ approach to education and may need someone else to take charge of some or all of the details (this is somewhat of a ‘homeschool cooperative’). This is only the beginning of a much bigger endeavor named ‘Pura Vida’. The phrase is a Spanish term meaning ‘Pure Life’, but it’s meaning runs deep. It is a phrase used mainly in Costa Rica and can be used as a greeting or a farewell, as an answer expressing that things are going well, or as a way of giving thanks. I, along with a handful of people I know, are trying to cultivate a life of ‘pura vida’ within our families. A relaxed life, lived in gratitude, striving to cultivate love and community. A life that does not concern itself with living up to ‘standards’ or being concerned about our children being ‘ahead’ or ‘behind’. Such a life spills over into the education of our kids where our goal has nothing to do with reaching any standard or achievement which comes from an outside source (i.e. the government, public education, etc.). A short bio. . .I am the homeschooling mother of 6 children who have never been in a modern ‘school’. I have a BA in Sociology and am formally qualified to teach in a pre-school (24 units in Education) or act as a substitute teacher. I have been working with kids for 26 years and have taught pre-school, been in charge of after-school programs for elementary aged kids, taught guitar to kids of all ages, tutored, taught arts and crafts, and taught all of my own children. My philosophy of education has been influenced mostly by Rudolf Steiner and Charlotte Mason with a sprinkle of Montessori and a side of unschooling. I am interested in the development of creatively independent minds. I will start on January 12th, 2015. Here is the schedule and fees (there will likely be a one time fee for materials, but that is to be determined by interest): Full program with all course work including music, art, and PE as well as the standard classes: Mon-Thurs 8 AM-3 PM (possibly some work to do at home), including lunch $275/month Part time choices including music, art, and PE: Mon-Thurs 8 AM-11:30 AM $200/month Mon/Wed 8 AM-11:30 AM $125/month Tues/Thurs 8 AM-11:30 AM $125/month I don’t know exactly what this project is going to look like. It will be geared towards the needs of the kids/families as well as the needs of our community. I do know that it will look little like our modern ‘schools’. Kids will learn how to read well, write well, learn basic math well, and gain experience in art, music, and nature study. And, they will have fun and learn how to have healthy relationships with others of all ages. They will NOT be learning the same content as our schools are teaching. Nor will we be functioning on the same schedule for learning or timing as that of the modern brick and mortar ‘school’. This project is not based on any particular faith. However, the encouragement of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control is operating at the core here. Prayers may be offered before meals and there may be days and festivals that are observed that are rooted in faith (i.e. Michaelmas or Martinmas, Christmas, etc.). But, the use of books that attempt to evangelize any particular faith will not be used. The use of media and technology is also discouraged. We are not completely against it’s use, but we are very much ‘for’ it’s limited use. Kids will not be allowed to have phones or other personal electronic devices (parents can always call me for any reason). At this point, the times and the fees are somewhat negotiable. This is a lot for a Facebook post so I am going to quit talking at this point. If you have any questions at all, please e-mail me at ‘[email protected]’. PASS IT ON!!! Pura Vida! Heather
