Hey everyone, Here is the agenda for Intermediate MCC for next week (Tuesday, July 15th and Thursday, July 17th). Agenda for Tuesday MCC Week 8 Introduction 5 minutes The moderator will go through the agenda with the class to make sure that everyone is on the same page. The moderator will then answer any questions that students or teachers might have about the agenda. Round 1 20 minutes Students and teachers will discuss this week’s vocabulary list. If there are any words that students are unfamiliar with, they should figure them out with there teacher. With whatever time is left, students should try to make as many sentences using the vocabulary as possible. Round 2 20 minutes Students and teachers will discuss celebrity endorsements. Who do they benefit most, the celebrity or the company? Have students ever seen a celebrity endorse a product that they plainly have little use for (example, a male celebrity endorsing makeup)? What is the best celebrity endorsement you have seen? BREAK 10 minutes Round 3 30 minutes As the final project for the evening, students will give a short presentation. Students will create a product which is based on a movie or TV character. The product should fit with some aspect of the character that most people will recognize. An example could be “Jack and Rose Jewellery: for those times when the relationship has become icy and is sinking” (after the characters from Titanic). This round, students will work with teachers to brainstorm what character they want to create a product based on, and what the product will be. What aspect of the product will connect to the character? What will the selling points of the product be? Who will the product be targeted toward? Round 4 20 minutes This round, students will give their presentations. Teachers should continue to take notes on the last student they worked with one on one. Feedback 10 minutes Teachers will have a couple of minutes to finish filling out their evaluation forms. As a class, teachers will give feedback to the last student they worked with one on one (from round 3). While teachers are primarily responsible for giving feedback to the last student they worked with, they are welcome to give feedback to all of the students that they worked with one on one. Agenda for Thursday MCC Week 8 Introduction 5 minutes The moderator will read through the agenda with the class to make sure that everyone is on the same page. The moderator will then answer any questions that teachers or students might have about the agenda. Round 1 20 minutes Students and teachers will read the article titled “Rare Stamp Sells for $9.5 Million” Teachers should help students with any unfamiliar vocabulary, as well as pronunciation. With whatever time is left in the round, students and teachers will discuss their opinion of the article. Round 2 20 minutes Students and teachers will discuss whether they have any collections that might be worth money in the future. When they were young, did they ever try to keep something (such as a toy or a comic book) in pristine condition? Do you think of collecting something that you could sell in the future? Were they ever given something, or did they ever by anything, that seemed to have little worth at first, but then they found out that it was worth more than expected? Round 3 20 minutes This round, students and teachers will discuss whether they would ever consider selling a prized possession for money. What is their most prized possession? How much money would it take for them to part with it? Would students have any other conditions for giving up the possession other than money? BREAK 10 minutes Round 4 20 minutes As a final project for the evening, students will have a round table discussion. The topic of discussion will be “Would you take up a hobby / start collecting something only on the chance that it might be valuable in the future?” This round, students will work with teachers to arrange their arguments. Teachers should help students with their grammar, pronunciation and ideas, if the student has no ideas. Round 5 20 minutes This round, students will have their round table discussion. While teachers will not actively participate in the discussion, they are welcome to coach their students and should continue to fill out the evaluation forms for the students they worked with during the evening. Feedback 10 minutes Teachers will have a couple of minutes to finish filling out their evaluation forms. As a class, teachers will give feedback to the last student they worked with one on one (from round 4). While teachers are primarily responsible for giving feedback to the last student they worked with, they are welcome to give feedback to all of the students that they worked with one on one. Rare stamp sells for $9.5 million There is a new world record for the sale of a postage stamp. It is for the one-of-a-kind, 1856 British Guiana One-Cent Magenta. The auction house Sothebys sold it in New York for $9.48 million. It is the fourth time the stamp has broken the record. Sothebys said the record would not be broken again, unless the same stamp came up for auction. A spokesman said: That price will be hard to beat, and likely wont be exceeded unless the British Guiana itself comes up for sale again in the future. A former curator of stamps at the British Library said the sale was like buying the Mona Lisa. An anonymous buyer bought the stamp. It was last owned by an heir to the du Pont chemical fortune. He is currently in prison for killing an Olympic champion wrestler. A 12-year-old stamp collector first found the stamp in 1873. He sold it a few years later for about $50 in todays money – a lot back then. It has since had a dozen owners, including the French government. The Sothebys spokesman was amazed at the stamps popularity. He said: This is the most valuable item in the world by weight. Its just a tiny piece of paper. He was happy a collector bought it and not an investor.
