Hey folks, Dan here. We got lots of stuff in this week so Im just gonna cut right to the chase. Feature Films/American TV: --AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS: Indie comedy/drama featuring Parker Posey and Bruce Greenwood. --BORGMAN: Bizarre/surreal Dutch thriller about a suspicious drifter enacting devious deeds against a dysfunctional family. Reminiscent of DOGTOOTH. Receives SEAL OF APPROVAL from Dan and Miguel. Truly sui generis! --BRICK MANSIONS: Remake of the (majorly awesome!!!) French slugfest DISTRICT B13 starring the late Paul Walker. --CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER: Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson are back for more Marvel action in this sequel to THE FIRST AVENGER. Supposedly in the vein of 70s/80s paranoid thrillers such as THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and BLOW OUT. --THE COLD LANDS: Indie drama starring Lili Taylor. --FED UP: Documentary exploring Americas obesity epidemic and the food industrys role in aggravating it. --GODS POCKET: Blackly comic drama starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, and Christina Hendricks. Hoffman plays a lowlife amid a hornets nest of trouble following the death of his stepson. --THE HEART OF BRUNO WIZARD: Engaging doc depicting the life story of the famed 70s British punk/80s fashion icon. --HOMELAND (Season 3): Showtime drama w/ Claire Danes; critically praised. --JACKPOT: Pulpy Norwegian thriller which purportedly has a high body count and Coen Brothers vibe. --KORENGAL: This investigative doc on the soldiers experience of war in Afghanistan is a follow-up to the Oscar nominated RESTREPO. --LAST PASSENGER: British actioner bout people on a commuter train bound for danger. --A LONG WAY DOWN: Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, and Aaron Paul share a bond and strive to help each other cope with lifes problems. Adaptation of a Nick Hornby book. --PALO ALTO: Directorial debut of Gia Coppola -- Francis grand-daughter. Episodically structured exposé concerning dysfunctional Bay Area teens. Periodically riffs on FAST TIMES, but possesses more serious aspirations. Dan recommends and Voice critic Stephanie Zacharek declares the movie perfectly captures the vibe of late high school, in a way thats both of its time and timeless. Cast includes a brooding Emma Roberts and an ultra-sleazy James Franco. --WILLOW CREEK: Found footage-style horror movie concerning everyones favorite Sasquatch. Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait directs. --WORDS & PICTURES: Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche play schoolteachers falling in love in this drama from Fred Schepisi (ROXANNE, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION). British TV: --CASE HISTORIES (Series 1 + 2): The one and only Jason Isaacs is on the case in this British series. Say Hello to Mr. Isaacs for us and Mark Kermode! --POIROT (Seasons 10, 11, and 12): David Suchet plays Agatha Christies detective, Hercule Poirot, in this British TV favorite. --THE WIPERS TIMES: Dramatic TV feature starring Ben Chaplin as a WWI soldier who discovers a working printing press and begins publishing the eponymous satirical magazine. Reissues/Repertory ---THE BURGLAR: Nifty noir curio starring Jayne Mansfield (shot before and released after her breakout pic, THE GIRL CANT HELP IT); filmed in and around our city of Brotherly Love. Noir master/Philly native David Goodis adapts his own novel of the same name. --ACROSS 110TH STREET: Blaxsploitation/crime classic starring Yaphet Kotto, Anthony Quinn, and Anthony Franciosa. Terrific title track from Bobby Womack. Dan recommends! --THE END OF AN AFFAIR (1955): Romantic drama starring Deborah Kerr, Van Johnson, John Mills, and Peter Cushing (!!!). Helmed by the underrated Edward Dmytryk, this adaptation of the Graham Greene novel was later remade with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore in starring role. --HAMMER 4 FILM FAVORITES: DRACULA: Christopher Lee plays the infamous bloodsucker in four films from British Horror studio, Hammer Films.
