Hey yall... I must admit something. I grew up on Long Island. But have become a confirmed country boy. If there are 3 houses in a mile range, your too close. I have not gotten that far off the beaten path yet...!! I want to get even more into the country life in the next few years. I never killed my own food. Im not a hunter. Not opposed to it just not my thing. I love guns and am licensed. I never grew my own food, plant nor animal... until this year. Earlier this year, I raised 1 dozen Cornish hens.... in a pen in my LIVINGROOM!!! It took me 5 hours to kill one with a cleaver. LOL. I had a neighbor who took 15 minutes to snap the rest of their necks for me in exchange for 2 processed birds. I do have an acre of land I am in the process of ridding it of those pesky palmetto bushes. So trees, the damn bushes and grass grows there. My Mexican neighbor grows rows and rows of cactus that they use for food. So stuff grows there. Its sandy. Its Central Florida. I really want to learn to grow my own food. I purchased an WWI era BALL pressure canner and want to have a stock pile next season. Where can I start? Whats easiest for a virgin grower to start with? Now remember this is Central Florida going into a growing season where your ends cause its not blistering hot here. To give you an idea, orange season is about to start in October / November until June when it ends. Where could I go to get hands on experience with canning? If I was able to do it with somebody once.. I would be fine. So lets hear it my fine country farmer friends. Thanks. Scott
