Hi All, I thought I would do a little writing to share some of my learnings at the doTERRA convention this year. In case you didnt know I flew my family to Salt Lake City Utah to attend with 12,000 other people. Like mined people! All working towards natural medicine and wellness through sharing doTERRA in there own circle. I was nervous. That many people? I dont even go to concerts. To my surprise (and the help of LOTS of Melissa essential oil (available at the show case in between general sessions) it felt less overwhelming than I thought. The isles were wide, the lighting was low, the huge screens everywhere displayed images of beautiful lavender, flowers, meadows and nature. The stage was a wall of real live plants. How beautiful! The ventilation system was scented with Wild Orange, sometimes Lemongrass and often Peppermint. The most special thing that I really appreciated was the amazing amount of good feelings I got. Excitement and passion filled the room. And it was a room full of wonderful people happy and heart centered. No, really that is what I felt. If someone was having a bad day, the joy far out weight it and washed it away. It was delightful. This week I want to share with you something that has been on my mind and heart since I started using doTERRA products. What about carbon foot print? Why do the founders believe in sourcing world wide? I am a firm believer that our diets should be localized, that we should be buying from local businesses and that we should focus in on investing in each other and local economy. We have gotten too global and are negatively effecting our world because of it. These are strong views, right! So how do they fit in with doTERRAs global sourcing of their essential oils? This was not something I was expecting to get an answer for. I figured I would be left to myself to figure out and... well I would just have to justify it, right? No. Im impressed, thankful and honored to have these oils brought to me from all corners of the globe. They are precious, special and intelligently powerful. They come from places that are practicing my values and Im supporting their continuance of doing so. Emily Wright, on the second day of convention, gave a wonderful and eye opening presentation. Most of us already knew the basic the reason the founders of doTERRA source the plants used for their essential oils: It is that a plant grown in their indigenous, for example Peppermint found in the Northwest and Lavender found in France as well as Lemons that are grown in Italy not Cicily, have more complex make-up and a more powerful healing ability. Emily shared other reasons. On her travels around the world and meets with farmers that grow, harvest and make essential oils. This year she talked about her travels to Inda and Italy. While she was in Inda she met with a family, who for five gernerations, worked their land and hills to plant Lemongrass. She walked up the five miles to the harvest site (see picture below) and participated in other parts of the processes like filling the distiler. There are many details she shared. After getting to know their practaces, a bit about their land, processes and how they ran their farm she would then take a sample of the crude oil that this farm produced and sent it off for testing. It came back passing doTERRAs standard. And now our Lemongrass is coming from this farm for the next few years. What impressed me was learning how impactful this contract was for these people (the farmers and the community that the farmers employed). They now have a buyer for their oil that is investing in them because of their continued good practices and then pay them a fair price for their work. In Italy, Emily and Gregory Cook, visited an older gentleman who farms Lemon and Bergamont trees. Though his Bergamont trees where not what doTERRA was looking for (because the constituents) the Lemons were perfect. Along with his farm and a few other surrounding farms doTERRA, and essentially us, are able to contract with them for four years! They have a processing plant that produces, from start to finish, the essential oil. A gentlemen, in a video we saw, talked about the security that this gave his community. The people there could plan on sending their kids to school and plan on being employed with good pay for the next four years. He cared so much for his trees and showed some of his farming practices and care. Both Emily and Gregory have huge hearts and shared some sweet stories about the people and families they met. They are humble and respectful and trust in the wisdom of these farmers. I starting to feel a bit proud, are you? We are financially investing in them and their wisdom and knowledge of these plants that has been pasted down from generation to generation. Together we are protecting and continuing tradition and good for the land agricultural practices. It seems that we will become, more and more, a global community. And if we can constantly balance our global and local relationships... I think we can make a beautiful future together. So life is about balance, no? In some ways we need to preserve our own local wisdom and customs that keep us healthy and empowered. And we are learning the world is not as small as we once thought. We are all effecting each other now more than ever. And if I can support my local farmer as well as a farmer in another country, to protect the better stewardship of land. Is that not a wonderful balance? Is it not amazing to be apart of a company that is investing in the global economy through preserving sustainable farming. doTERRA is not reinventing the wheel, they are not subject to a learning curve when it comes to making essential oils. They are investing in people and cultures that have been passing this trade from generation to generation. If you are still wondering if our essential oils are organic, pesticide free, sustainably harvested, purchased for a fair or better than market pricing or sourced from environmentally practiced farms. I am here to say yes, yes they are! At convention these stories were shared as well as others and some science and chemistry to explain further. David Sterling and the other owners of doTERRA are deeply dedicated to the betterment of our world and the health of all people. I was and am moved by the stewardship of this company. They are really centered in the heart and operating with conscious business integrity. They will continue to move slowly as they are growing fast.
