BRATTLEBORO FILM FESTIVAL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lissa Weinmann 802 254 8169 brattleborofilmfestival.org ‘Short Term 12’ Wins Brattleboro Film Festival’s Audience Chosen ‘Best in Fest’ Repeat Screening Thursday, November 14 at 8:30 pm Follows a Week-Long ‘Countdown to Best in Fest’ Repeating Best-Loved Films Starting Tonight 11 November, Brattleboro, Vermont: The Brattleboro Film Festival’s (BFF) announced the 2013 audience-chosen ‘Best in Fest’ winner is ‘Short Term 12’ (2013 Destin Daniel Cretton, 96 min, USA), an emotionally involving portrait of Grace, a compassionate young staff member at a group home for at-risk teens, who is forced to confront her own demons when a new girl arrives. The film was chosen among 30 current films screened at the 2013 BFF. “Cretton has made an outstanding independent film on a low budget with a cast of young actors that puts mainstream movies to shame,” Merry Elder, BFF President and Head of Film Selection said. “Brie Larson shines in the break-out role of Grace and strong supporting actors such as Keith Stanfield as Marcus deeply impressed BFF audiences.” The ‘Best in Fest’ prize will be conferred and the film re-screened to close the festival on Thursday, November 14 at 8:30 pm at the Latchis Theatre, the principal venue of the two-week festival. This year BFF launched a ‘Countdown to Best in Fest’ ranking audience’s best-loved films and offering repeat screenings at 8:30 pm every night at the Latchis Theater (following the 6:30 pm nightly Latchis screenings of all six parts of ‘Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie’) as follows: Monday, November 11, 4th Best in Fest, 8:30 pm: Hannah Arendt (2013 Margarethe von Trotta, 113 min, Germany partially subtitled drama): A superb drama on the fallout from real-life Jewish-German philosopher Hannah Arendt’s reporting on the 1961 trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann raises provocative questions on the nature of evil and who is responsible, a fascinating look at a woman unafraid to think and speak freely. Tuesday, November 12, 3rd Best in Fest, 8:30 pm: Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth (2013 Pratibha Parmar, 84 min, US/UK doc): The film offers a penetrating look at the life and art of an artist, renegade and human rights activist, the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Color Purple. A universal story of triumph against all odds. Wednesday, November 13, 2nd Best in Fest, 8:30 pm: Maidentrip (Jillian Schlesinger, 85 min, Netherlands, doc): Fourteen-year-old Dutch teenager Laura Dekker sets out on an epic voyage to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. Holding a camera at arms length, Laura records her daunting venture using it as both a video log and as a companion. Thursday, November 14, Best in Fest Award and Festival Closing Screening, 8:30 pm: Short Term 12 (Destin Daniel Cretton, 96 min, USA, drama): With equally believable performances by the cast of young people and twenty-something staffers, this indie production puts most mainstream films to shame. The film has a perfectly balanced, refreshingly honest script, full of humanity, an outstanding film, well deserving the Oscar buzz it is getting. “It is interesting to note that the top four films all feature female leads, are evenly split between documentaries and dramas, and are weighted toward female directors,” Merry Elder, President of BFF and Head of Film Selection, said, reiterating BFF’s commitment to featuring characters and themes under-represented in mainstream media that tend to reflect the creative, socially conscious and eclectic spirit of Brattleboro itself. The not for profit, volunteer-run BFF also announced it launched a Kickstarter campaign to help pay for this year’s films and build a financial foundation for next year’s festival.
