Hi All, Well we are one month into last four months of our project in Gunbalanya, which is in the Kakadu West Arnhem Land. Our womens group Strong Women Together continue to thrive taking great strides in both attendance and amount of hours spent in the project. The women are now attending 8am-4pm each and this has seen their productivity fly. We have been given an old hall to use for our project, it was in quite a mess when we started. Cleaning it up we disturbed lots of spiders and a snake that had made the hall home. The women have now had a second market stall in community and had a very successful outcome. In particular their candles and jewelry sold well, they also got 3 orders for their tie dye handbags. We are off to Jabiru with the group tomorrow to develop a few shopfront opportunities for selling their product, in particular their candles which are now of a very high quality. The women are keen now to develop a line of soaps to be marketed as well. Ange works very well with the women, ensuring every step of the way that the group both understand and own the journey. This gentleness and disregard for her own outcome provides the very safe environment for the women to lead their own enterprise. Alongside this I have been engaging with the men to develop a beautification project on the hall grounds. The men have already cleaned up rubbish, raked weeds and stones and planted a row of Murrayas which look great across the front of the hall. The men will also be developing a watering system for the existing plants and others that will be planted as part of the beautification project. The men rarely display excitement, but I have caught them looking and smiling when going past the hall 8-). Our aim is to give the hall back to the community with beautiful surrounds and hopefully a successful womens enterprise that works within. All in all, the Unlocking Gunbalanyas Potential Project is moving along quite smoothly. Continued commitment from the women will see Strong Women Together candles and soaps selling well everywhere!!
