Hi All, just wondering what others experiences with drip irrigation have been - especially using a Jackie French style let things self-seed approach. Having read Josh Byrnes recommendations for them in a recent Gardening Australia mag (and figuring that hes gardening in much the same soil as me... having previously thought the spacing for sand looked a bit impractical) Ive just installed 4 litre/hr drippers at 30cm spacing in a new vegie bed, having always used microsprays before. Im finding that some of the plants mid-way between drippers are looking a bit dry... and that the surface definitely looked a bit dry for the good bug flower seeds Ive scattered through the vegies (and have subsequently been hand-watering as well... which kind of defeats the purpose of installing retic!), and Im not sure whether Im operating them wrong (maybe should leave them on longer for the dripped zones to merge?) or what. My father says hes never had much success with drippers in the past, but concedes that he may have had them too far apart. One thing I havent done yet is add any mulch - mainly on account of not wanting to smother the seeds... ...any advice on appropriate thicknesses of mulch to conserve soil moisture but allow seed germination underneath, and/or any successes/failures/challenges with drip irrigation? Any feedback would be very much appreciated! :-)
