Hi, As you may be aware a report came out detailing possible side effects and dangers of Niaspan. Since I certainly do not want my patients to be taking meds that are either dangerous or ineffective, I got opinions from Prof Lance Gould a preventative cardiologist from UT, and also from Dr Bradley Bale, a physician engaged in cardiovascular disease prevention and author of the book Beat the Heart Attack Gene. Both physicians are unimpressed with the reports and feel that there is no new information and that Niaspan still has an important role to play in coronary vascular disease prevention. Personally, I will continue to use Niaspan in my patients and to take it myself. Dr Gould also sent me the results of a study using statins, together with nicotinic acid, (Niaspan) and Colestipol (Welchol). In comparing usual care with the test group, there was a REDUCTION IN DEATHS fron 19.8% to 1.3% and a REDUCTION IN CORONARY VASCULAR EVENTS from 18.8% to 5.3%. This was the Familial Atherosclerosis Treatment Study (FATS). Having said all this, if any patients feel uneasy about taking Niaspan, I of course respect this and any decision they might take regarding the taking of this or any other medication. It goes without saying that my primary concern is providing the safest and most effective care to you, my patients. On another note, I will be repeating my previous town hall meeting on coronary vascular disease prevention. It will be held in the Memorial City complex on August 6th from 6 to 8 pm. Please make every effort to attend and feel free to bring friends and family. A formal invitation will follow. I would appreciate those attending replying to this email so that we can get an approximate head count. For those not attending, please bring a note signed by your personal physician. Kind regards Cyril Wolf.
