Hi Deb. Ive been doing a little bit of research on NLP and I keep seeing that it sounds like manipulation of others. Can you give me a better perspective? My answer: As in any good technique, you can always use your powers for evil, not good. With jest aside, that is not the purpose of intent of NLP. Can you manipulate people if you are good at it – absolutely. NLP is about the study of excellence in your own self. It teaches you to have a higher level of empathy and how to step into another person’s shoes so you can better understand and better communicate with them. NLP teaches us that we are responsible for the quality of our communications and so it is OUR problem to address if we are not being understood or communicating well. It looks for the positive intent in all actions so that we can accept and move on and not linger on past hurts. It teaches us how to reduce trauma and more and more and more things than I can cover in a short email. The charlatans of NLP take the skills they learn and can manipulate people. This is their character flaw in action. NLP students who come to the table with a good purpose and the intent of improving themselves find this a concept that is not even considered. I personally have utilized NLP to manipulate the conversation in order to save my life while in the field doing investigations. Otherwise, it would be unconscionable for me to do so in my world.
