Hi Fans and friends...of FB below is the press statement of Basketball to Media your comments The Mainland Basketball League (MBL) will be reintroduced this year according to the Chief Executive Officer of the MBL and Deputy Chairman of the Papua New Guinea Basketball Federation Mr Timothy Lepa. MBL CEO Lepa made the announcement during the PNG Souths Basketball Challenge held in Mt Hagen last weekend which attracted interests and teams from all over the highlands region especially from the rural areas. The idea of the concept is to build and encourage players from rural competitions to partake at a semi professional competition and build their level of competency in the sport. “All the time, it’s always Lae and Port Moresby based players being selected and are competitive but from the challenge in Mt Hagen, I’ve seen that there’s talents in rural areas.’’ “Even though height is said to be an advantage in this sport, the Highlands’ talents have convinced me that with speed and accuracy one can outplay his/her opponent.” Lepa added. The challenge will be the biggest among the mainland centres with teams from Lae, Madang, Goroka, Mt Hagen, Southern Highlands and Enga expected to vie for the top prizes worth over K50 000. A total of six teams will be competing among themselves within 5 weeks per round at different participating venues in the Momase and Highlands regions. Talks have already been tabled and proposal have been to Coca Cola Amatil Limited under its Sprite brand for the naming rights of the competition but local and provincial MP’s to assist in financially supporting their respective provincial team. The calendar of the competition will be released at the end of September after the executives of the challenge meet.
