Hi Losties, The following story is one of my favourites, Ive often wondered where Corroborees may have taken place in Newcastle. A KING IN NEWCASTLE. Some men are born great, others achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust on them. And it will be readily admitted that a king must be included among the first of the above mentioned classes. Yet all kings are not fond of making demonstrations on their entry into a city, and do not insist upon being received with sound of trumpet and tuck of drum. The king now in Newcastle is an elderly gentleman, of pleasing manners and of courteous address. His title is Curragundi Joe, and his aboriginal subjects are to be found in the Moree district. There can be no question regarding his rank, for the brass plate he wears round his neck forms the insignia of his office. He speaks English well, and has in his time been in the police service of the country. Joe has never been further south than Inverell, and his reason for coming to Newcastle is to see what the big world is doing. In continuation of this purpose, he intends to proceed to Sydney. He and his people intend to give a corroboree and aboriginal entertainment in Newcastle, and hope when they appear to receive a share of public recognition and the patronage of the white folk.
