Hi! My husband, Jeffrey Warwick, is in need of a kidney - TopicsExpress

Hi! My husband, Jeffrey Warwick, is in need of a kidney transplant. As you might imagine, sharing this need with people can lead to an awkward situation. The reason it can be awkward is that by simply sharing this information, the recipient might feel that he/she is being solicited to donate, but may not want to. This is perfectly ok, of course, but at the same time, our fear of creating an awkward situation can limit our ability to actually ask someone to consider being a donor. Kind of a “catch 22”. I’ve recently learned that the appropriate approach to helping Jeff find a living donor is not to actually ask; rather, the best approach is to simply inform people of his need and request them to pass along the information to others. Perhaps somewhere along the way, someone who has been informed may want to consider being his donor. With this in mind, I share the following information with you and ask you to pass it along, as you see fit: Jeff has Polycystic Kidney Disease. More information at this link: https://pkdcure.org/ . His Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is currently 15, stage 5 of Chronic Kidney Disease. More information at this link: davita/kidney-disease/overview/stages-of-kidney-disease/stage-5-of-chronic-kidney-disease/e/4753 Although he is on a transplant waiting list (kidney from a cadaver), it can take 5 or more years to receive one. Doctors would prefer he receive a transplant sooner, from a living donor. There are two ways someone can consider donating. The first is to contact his transplant center ( barnabashealth.org/Specialty-Services/Kidney-Care/The-Living-Donor-Institute.aspx ) and they start with a comparison of blood. His blood type is A, so he’s compatible with types A and O blood. If his potential donor has a different blood type, and/or isn’t a match for him, he/she can be considered for a “paired exchange”. A paired exchange is when donor 1 and recipient 1 aren’t a match, donor 2 and recipient 2 aren’t a match, but donor 1 matches recipient 2 and donor 2 matches recipient 1. More info at this link: lkdn.org/overview_of_living_tx2.html . And another link: kidney.org/transplantation/livingDonors/index.cfm . Feel free to share this information with anyone you want to. Please bear in mind that no one should ever feel pressured to donate; however, if he/she has an interest in learning more, please let me know by replying to this e-mail or calling me on my home phone at (732) 938-4716. And PLEASE know that anyone who begins the evaluation process can stop AT ANY TIME, for any reason, no questions asked. I sincerely thank you for helping me share Jeff Warwick’s need for a healthy kidney. All the best, Linda Warwick
